TOKYO September 8, 2005 - ANA today unveiled its all new economy class seat for use on domestic flights. The new seats will be introduced from early next month on ANA’s Boeing 767-300 aircraft, and thereafter rolled out across the entire fleet.

Without increasing seat pitch (the distance between seats) the new design increases passenger leg room by 5cm by cleverly changing the position of the magazine pocket from knee level to occupy space behind the tray table, which also makes magazines and safety information more easily accessible (see picture below).

To further enhance amenity, a coat hook and stowage pocket have been provided, and the reclining button redesigned for greater ease of use.

Personal space is also enhanced by a slimmer cushion and seat back, which are contoured in a new ergonomic design created to ease pressure on passengers’ lower back and knees, allowing them to travel in greater comfort even on longer trips. The stylish light grey colour scheme complements the popular Super Seat Premium, which was unveiled last year to cater for the customer seeking business-class levels of service on domestic flights. The overall impression created is one of more individual space in more relaxing, and more stylish, surroundings.

In a world airline first, the seat cover has been treated using a photosemiconductor technique, giving it more resistance to bacteria and odours, thus adding to a cleaner and more pleasant cabin environment.

As well as being easy on the passenger, the new seat is easy on the natural environment. Its carbon fibre reinforced plastic frame makes it 5% lighter than the newest aluminium-frame seats currently in use on ANA’s fleet, meaning less fuel burn and fewer emissions, while maintaining strength and safety levels. In a typical configuration, an ANA 777-2000 aircraft equipped with the new seat will use 200 fewer barrels (40,000 litres) of fuel per year than current models. The seat cushion is also made of recyclable carbon fibre material.
