Airport Guide
Fukuoka is the largest city in Kyushu and has over 1.27 million people. The city has two main areas, called Hakata and Fukuoka. Hakata is a commercial district that was developed from the old port of Nanotsu. Fukuoka was developed from the castle town of the domain of Kuroda, which yielded 520 thousand "koku" of rice. In the Hakata area, there are Kushida Shrine, a main shrine of Hakata famous for the Hakata Gion Yamagasa Festival, and the old Hakozaki Shrine with its majestic main hall roofed with Japanese cypress bark. The Fukuoka area has many green spaces and a river that create an oasis within this urban area. There are the remains of Fukuoka Castle where the Otemon Gate and Main Tower create a historic atmosphere, Ohori Park built around the moat of the castle, and Nishi Park. These two areas are separated by the Naka River. Nakasu is an entertainment district with many places to eat and drink. Neon lights reflecting on the river´s surface and Hakata "ramen" (Chinese noodles) stalls add a sense of charm to Fukuoka City´s nightlife. The city has a number of different faces. West of Nakasu is the downtown area of Tenjin with many office buildings, department stores, and specialty stores. There is also the futuristic, urban complex called Canal City Fukuoka with stores, restaurants, and cinemas. By the seaside in the western part of the city is Momochi. Hawks Town with the Fukuoka Dome, a hotel, and shopping mall is located here. Fukuoka City always has something new to excite you.
