In 658 the Ezo peoples residing in this region were conquered, and Wagita was a place name there. A century later, in the Shoku Nihongi annal, the present characters for this prefecture (aki="autumn"; ta="field") are already found, a Japanization of the non-Japanese Wagita.

Geography
Located on the west side of theTohoku district. About 70% of the prefecture's total area (8,444 sq. km) is heavily forested. The prefecture is divided roughly into a coastal area and an inland, mountainous area.

Climate
Akita's average annual rainfall is 1,496mm. Average annual temperature is 11.2 °C. Strong northwesterly seasonal winds bring cold air masses, and heavy snow, during the long winters, but summers are mild and moist.
