The name means simply "green forest." In 1871, the prefecture's name was changed from Hirosaki to Aomori, after the fishing town of the same name (known for its green trees) had grown into an important port, known once for its green trees.

Aomori is the northernmost prefecture on Japan's main island of Honshu. Its capital, Aomori city, is located about 700 km north of Tokyo, at 41°N, about the same latitude as New York, Rome and Madrid.

Climate
The first snowfall in November begins a long season of ideal conditions for winter sports such as skiing and ice skating. Spring arrives at the end of April. Summers here are shorter than in southern Japan, and autumn seems to linger longer. Average daytime temperatures range from 22°C in July to 0.5°C in January. Average annual rainfall is 1,360 mm.
