Geography The prefecture lies at the northern apex of Kyushu and is largely a fertile plain, which is watered by Kyushu's largest river, the Chikugo. The area is strategically important as being the closest point between the islands of Kyushu and Honshu. Hakata Bay, a large, strategic and fine natural harbor, dominates the northern coastline.
