Unlike almost all of the other prefectures, Fukuoka received its name from the name of the feudal domain — the Fukuoka/Kuroda domain. Why the general avoidance of using domain names for prefectures was ignored in
the case of this prefecture is not clear.

The prefecture lies at the northern apex of Kyushu and is largely a fertile plain, which is watered by Kyushu's largest river, the Chikugo. The area is strategically important as being the closest point between the islands of Kyushu and Honshu. Hakata Bay, a large, strategic and fine natural harbor, dominates the northern coastline.

Climate
Average annual temperature of 16.6°C, with the highest 36.0°C and the lowest -2.6°C. Total annual rainfall amounts to 1,275 mm.
