In 1594 the warrior lord Yoshikiyo Kimura built a castle called Sugime Castle. The name at some point was changed to Fukushima Castle, and Fukushima became the name of the town that grew around the castle, and eventually was given to the prefecture. The name means, roughly, "felicitous island."

Geography Fukushima Prefecture is located in the southern part of northern Honshu (the Tohoku region) on the Pacific side of the island. The western sections, in the mountain spine of the land mass, is quite different in both climate and culture from the eastern section facing the Pacific Ocean.
