This city's name and combination of characters is very strange. Hako means "box," and date is something like an official building. One source claims that the local lord had a boxy structure built on the location; another is that the word derives from the Ainu hakuchun, meaning "small lodge."

The city is straddles an isthmus on the southwest (the "tail") of Hokkaido, facing the sea on two sides, with Mt. Hakodate at the point of the isthmus.

Climate
Hakodate: average temperature of 11.5°C in May, 21.6°C in August, -7.3°C in January and February. The average annual temperature is 8.5°C with an average annual rainfall of about 1,154.9 mm.
