In 1589 warlord Terumoto Mori built a castle and named it Hiroshima Castle, taking the first part of the name of Hiromoto Oe (a famous warrior ancestor of Mori) and the last hunk of the name of Motonaga Fukushima, another renowned warrior who lived where the castle was being built. The name was later adopted by the prefecture.
