The characters in the name of this prefecture literally mean "fawn island," but the origin of the name is obscure. There are numerous theories: the Sakurajima volcano was once called Kagoshima>; many wild deer made the region their home; the local dialect word for "volcano" is kagu; etc.

Geography
Kagoshima Prefecture, located in southwestern Kyushu Island, has more than 2,600 km of coastline on the Pacific Ocean and East China Sea. The Kirishima volcanic range is in the center of the prefecture. There are a total of 2,601 hot spring sources in the prefecture.

Climate
The prefecture, extending 600 km north to south, generally experiences temperate to subtropical weather. Precipitation (average 2,758 mm annually) is high during the rainy season in early summer, and numerous typhoons may be experienced at summer's end. Average annual temperature is 18.7°C.
