kanji
The word "kochi" (elevated wisdom) seems to be an adaptation of another, older term. The castle of the feudal lord completed in 1611 was built on a hill, which became known as Kochi-yama, and the name was subsequently taken on by the town, city and the prefecture.

Geography
The prefecture occupies most of the central and southern part of Shikoku Island, bordered on the north by mountains and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. About 84 percent of the land area is mountainous, and the Shimanto, the Mononobe, and the Niyodo rivers flow into the Pacific from the mountains. A long coastline (705km) stretches from Cape Muroto to Cape Ashizuri on the west.

Climate
Generally mild, with heavy seasonal rains, though the higher mountain regions have cold winters. Typhoons are common in late summer to early winter. Annual daytime temperature average: 17°C.
