The region had a Miyagi County (gun), named because of the presence of Shinto shrines (miya) and a castle (gi or shiro). The prefecture was given the name due to either a bureaucratic or political decision.

Geography Miyagi Prefecture is located in northeastern Honshu on the Sendai Plain with the Ou mountains to the east, the Kitakami Highlands to the northeast. Major rivers include the Abukuma and the Kitakami.
