There is no clear explanation for the name of this prefecture. Seemingly it has very ancient origins, and the original name has undergone numerous modifications and changes before the present pronunciation and characters ("big"; "divide") were reached.

Geography
Oita prefecture is located in central Kyushu, bordered on the northeast by the Seto Inland Sea and on the east by the Bungo Suido Sea. Except for a few plains, most of the prefecture is mountainous and heavily forested with many natural hot springs. The Aso Kujyu and other national parks occupy nearly 30% of the land area.

Average annual temperature is 16°C, with an average annual rainfall of 2,009 mm.
