The sound of the word itself is clearly Ainu. Sapporobetsu means roughly "large river," and the characters are used for their phonetic value, not their meanings, to give this city its name.

Geography
Located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido's Ishikari Plain. The central part of the city (about 40%) is mostly flat, with the rest quite mountainous. There are numerous hot spring spas, ski resorts and other natural attractions in the area, easily reached on day trips.

Climate
Pleasant summer; cold and snow in winter with annual average of 9.2°C and 1,240 mm of rain. Sapporo's average temperature in February is -0.3°C (highs: 7.4°C; lows: -9.3°C).
