ana's japan destination guide

kanji
The name of this prefecture is truly ancient, appearing in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (a Heian Era [794-1185] record of the area) as the name of a local peninsula (which still has the same name). The characters literally mean "island root," and it is not difficult to see how a peninsula might be given such a name.

Geography
Faces the Japan Sea. Mostly flat, with numerous isthmuses and peninsulas on the coast, especially around Matsue. Two mountain ranges (Chugoku and the Hakusan Volcanic Chain) form the borders of the prefecture.

Climate
Summer around the coastal areas is relatively dry, but winter brings heavy rains. The opposite holds true for the mountainous areas. Average annual temperature along the coast is from 12 to 15°C.
