There are a number of prefectures with the character for "island" (shima) in their names. The name Tokushima literally means "virtuous island," probably in reference to the ideal location on which feudal lord Iemasa Hachisuka built his castle in 1585. The prefecture adopted the name in 1880.

Geography
Located in the eastern part of Shikoku. Mostly plains and low hills. More than three-quarters of the total area is forested.

Climate
Comparatively mild and humid with annual average of 16°C. Total annual rainfall amounts to 1,920mm. (Upper Naka River and Kaifu River area: over 3,000mm, North of Yoshino River area: around 1,400mm, sometimes 800mm to 900mm). Abundant sunshine means rich harvests.
