The two characters mean "birdcatcher." In roughly the 5th or 6th century, there was a community of birdcatchers or a birdcatcher's guild (tottori-be), which gave its name to a town and eventually to the prefecture.

Geography
120 km east to west and 20~50 km south to north. Between the long northern coast (Sea of Japan), and Chugoku Mountain Range in the south, about 74% of the land is wooded, with many hot springs and the craggy Mt. Daisen. The Tottori Sand Dunes are the only feature of its kind in Japan.

Climate
Comparatively mild, with annual average temp of 14.3°C, 2,000 mm of precipitation and deep snow in the higher mountain regions.
