The characters mean "wealthy mountains" or perhaps "wealth of mountains." A substantial region of the prefecture was part of the Kaga domain, the most affluent domain during the Edo period (besides the domains ruled by the Tokugawa family). The prefecture is mountainous. Other than that, any explanation gets complicated.

The prefecture faces the Japan Sea, with a narrow coastal plain between the high peaks of the Northern Japan Alps on the east the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture on the west.

Climate
Apart from strong winds from the south in the spring and heavy snows in the winter, the prefecture enjoys mild, pleasant climate through most of the year.
