Asthma Pregnancy Using CPAP

Canes
Q.  Can walking canes be brought on board?
A.  Yes. Walking canes can be brought on board. When not in use, your cane can be stored under the seat or other places that are handy. If you prefer, a cabin attendant can place your cane in a storage facility.

Oxygen Cylinders
Q.  Can I use the oxygen cylinders that are on board?
A.  The medical oxygen cylinders that are kept on board are for emergency use only. If there is even a slight chance that an oxygen cylinder may be needed during the flight, we advise the passenger to bring their own. ANA offers oxygen cylinder rentals, which must be requested before boarding. For more information, click here.

Dialysis Treatment (CAPD, HD)
Q.  I currently require dialysis treatment. Will I need a Medical Information Form (MEDIF)?
A.  Conducting continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treatment on board will be an act of medical treatment and requires submission of the Medical Information Sheet and Consent and Release. Please note that hemodialysis (HD) cannot be conducted on board.
Q.  I intend to use a dialysis machine at my destination. Can I bring my dialysis machine on board as carry-on baggage?
A.  Yes, as long as it meets the size restrictions of carry-on baggage. If it is too large, it may be checked in. In this case, we advise passengers that medical equipment be well wrapped in protective packaging. Please note that any equipment that affects the aircraft and its flight in any way cannot be brought on board. Please ask the Sky Assist Desk in advance about any concerns you may have about the medical equipment that you wish to travel with . For more information, click here.

Asthma
Q.  I have asthma. Can I travel on airplanes?
A.  Since severity of asthma varies from patient to patient, some judgment is necessary. Please consult your physician if you feel that there may be a risk. Your physician will have to decide. Nebulizers (medicine) can be brought on board. Click here for more information on the cabin environment.

Note: Restrictions on carry-on baggage are implemented by order of the Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry of Japan. For detailed and latest information (subject to change), please see the ministry's website.

Pregnancy
Q.  I am pregnant. Can I travel on airplanes?
A.  Yes you can, but that depends on your condition and how advanced your pregnancy is. Please consult your physician. If you are within 28 days of the date of delivery, submission of the Medical Information Sheet and Consent and Release is required. An accompanying physician is necessary if the date of delivery is within 7 days for domestic, and 14 days for international flights. (A Medical Information Sheet issued within 7 days of departure is required.) Click here for more information on the cabin environment.

Using CPAP
Q.  I have Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Can I use CPAP (*1) on board during international flights?
A.  We will confirm whether the model of CPAP machine you have can be used on board, and give you directions for its usage if so. Be sure to contact the ANA Sky Assist Desk in advance. For enquiries outside Japan, please contact your local ANA office directly. At present, only the following CPAP models can be used on ANA flights (international flight only). [2] Maximum power supply for each seat group is limited for safety reasons. When the power limit is exceeded, the power supply for the passenger next to you will be turned off as well.
[3] Power may be turned off without prior notice in case of system failure or over-consumption of power.
[4] Please make sure that ventilation of your CPAP is not blocked by a blanket, etc.
[5] Use only nondefective cables and equipment.
[6] The plug shape must be a type that can be firmly inserted into the socket and requires no plug-in adapters.
[7] ANA is not liable for any damages resulting from usage.
[8] Computer power supplies are designed for use with personal computers, and not for medical equipment that requires a high-definition power supply.

*1: CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines pump air through a nasal mask to ensure that the respiratory tract remains open. They are used by sufferers of Sleep Apnea Syndrome. They prevent snoring, allowing the user to sleep restfully.
