    About the Schengen Agreement
The establishment of the EU and the tying of the Schengen Agreement have greatly simplified entry and departure procedures within Europe. The Schengen Agreement was first signed in 1985 in Schengen, a small town in Luxembourg, and implemented in 1995.
Once a Japanese national has arrived at one of country, travel within the country is treated as "internal (domestic)" travel. The entry procedures for Japanese nationals are as follows.
    Disembarkation (entry) procedures
When traveling to a Schengen country via another Schengen country
The entry procedures are taken only in the country of first arrival. The customs inspection is made at the destination country.
Example: Narita to Madrid via Paris
The entry procedures are taken in Paris, and customs inspection made in Madrid.
    Embarkation (departure) procedures
When traveling from a Schengen country via another Schengen country
The departure procedures are taken only in the last Schengen country to be departed from. The customs inspection is made at the destination country.
Example: Madrid to Narita via Paris
The departure procedures are taken in Paris, and customs inspection done in Narita.
