ANA to be Sole Official Airline Sponsor of UNWTO’s 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development

Did you know that 2017 is the international year of tourism?

The United Nations (UN) has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

ANA is the only airline in Asia that is an Affiliate Member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the UN’s specialized agency helping implement the International Year of Tourism. Official sponsorship is limited to one company per industry, and we are happy to report that ANA was selected as the sole official airline sponsor!

UNWTO may be unfamiliar to many of you.

It is the UN agency responsible for promoting sustainable tourism as a driver of economic growth while respecting regional and national diversity. It is a huge organization with membership including 157 countries, 6 Associate Members and 500 Affiliate Members.

ANA joined UNWTO as an Affiliate Member last year in support of the organization’s mission to promote tourism to achieve a wide range of goals including employment creation, poverty reduction, sustainable resource allocation and environmental protection.

On January 18, the Official Launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 was held in Madrid, Spain.

A message from Osamu Shinobe, President and CEO of the All Nippon Airways, was broadcast at the event. In addition, Akira Nakamura, Senior Vice President and General Manager – London, attended and shook hands with UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, to affirm ANA’s ongoing commitment.

ANA Strategic Research Institute, an ANA Group company, played a key role in establishing the ONSEN Gastronomy Tourism Institute. The Institute promotes “onsen gastronomy walking,” which combines walks through cultural and historic sites, eating local gourmet food, and enjoying onsen hot spring baths, to invigorate the body and soul. Many of you participated in the event held last year.

Through networking and capturing the latest trends, ANA Group will continue to collaborate with UNWTO to help spread the word about Japan’s many attractions to the world. We will also contribute to the development and growth of all regions of the world through tourism.
