Changes to the self-quarantine period for fully vaccinated travelers entering Japan - Quarantine reduced to 3 days for business purposes

●● Travelers Entering Japan for Business Purposes ●●

Effective November 8, 2021 (10 am, Japan time), the self-quarantine period required upon arrival in Japan will be further reduced to 3 days for business travelers fully vaccinated against COVID-19 holding a valid vaccination certificate.

Specifically, the quarantine period will be reduced to 3 days, if the COVID-19 test taken on/after the 4th day is confirmed negative and reported to Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (Health Monitoring Center for Overseas Entrants) and the company/organization in Japan ensures that the traveler will take all necessary COVID-19 measures during their business trip.

This applies to eligible Japanese nationals as well as foreign nationals who are re-entering Japan, short-term travelers entering for business/commercial purposes and those traveling under special circumstances of which all eligible travelers must meet all requirements.

As for the new entry of all other foreign nationals currently being suspended, they will be permitted to enter Japan for specified business/commercial purposes in both the short-term and long-term, provided that they meet all requirements which include the required application form(s) to be submitted and approved by the relevant government office in advance.

●● All Other Eligible Travelers Entering Japan ●●

The self-quarantine period upon arrival in Japan is currently 10 days for fully vaccinated travelers (Japanese nationals and foreign nationals with the status residence of “Japanese Permanent Resident”, “Spouse or Child of a Japanese National”, “Spouse or Child of a Japanese Permanent Resident” or “Long Term Japanese Resident”) entering Japan who hold a COVID-19 vaccination certificate recognized as valid by the Government of Japan, provided that they notify the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of the negative result of the test (PCR test or antigen quantitative test) on/after the 10th day upon entry into Japan.


●● Requirements for All Fully Vaccinated Travelers ●●

The COVID-19 vaccination certificate is valid only if it meets all conditions listed below (1-5). Please prepare a copy of the original vaccination certificate to submit to the quarantine station.

1. All of the following items must be written in Japanese or English.

➀ Name, ➁ Date of birth, ➂ Vaccine name or manufacturer, ④ Date of vaccination, ➄ # of Vaccine doses

2. The COVID-19 vaccination certificate must be issued by an official body such as the government of any of the countries / regions listed here. Certificates issued in Japan that fall under any of the following categories listed here are also valid.

3. The vaccine name / manufacturer must be one of the following vaccines approved in Japan:

➀ COMIRNATY Intramuscular Injection / Pfizer
➁ Covishield / Vaxzevria intramuscular injection / AstraZeneca
➂ COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna Intramuscular Injection / Moderna

4.The vaccination certificate must be able to confirm at least two doses of either one of the vaccines listed above in 3.

* Even if different vaccines are given for the first and second dose, you must be vaccinated with either of the vaccines listed above in 3.

5. To be considered fully vaccinated, at least 14 days must have passed since the second vaccination date. (Note: The day of the second vaccination does not count as one of the 14 days.)
