Important Notice for Passengers Traveling to Japan - Please be sure to prepare required documents prior to departure

All passengers traveling to Japan are required to have a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test result at their departure country before boarding. Cases where passengers are being denied from boarding are increasing as certifications are not clearly indicating a valid specimen collection method, testing method, and/or testing period.

In addition, the installation of apps which are designated by the Japanese government (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) are required for entering Japan. The conditions required for entry back into the US is also listed, so please carefully review the checklist prior to departure.

Q&A / Other Points to Note:

Q 1: Is a test certificate is required for each passenger? What happens if all of the information is not completed?

A 1: Each passenger needs to have a negative test result. If all of the information specified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is not filled out correctly and completely, you may be denied boarding or entry into Japan.

It is strongly recommended by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to submit a valid test certificate in the specified format, but if you must present the test result together with the test certificate, they can only be accepted if they both indicate the same Name, Name of the doctor (Name of medical institution, Address of medical institution, Signature by doctor, An imprint of a seal), and Specimen Collection Date & Time. (In addition, other required information can be accepted if it is stated in either certificate.)

Q 2: Is it acceptable for the passenger to fill out the form in handwriting?

A 2: Passengers may only write the following items themselves:

Name, Date of Birth, Passport Number, Nationality, and/or Gender

Q 3: I am not able to print the test certificate but can I show it on my smartphone?

A 3: As a general rule, please find a way to print your test certificate. If you are unable to print it, you may display the test certificate on your electronic device (i.e., smartphone). However, in that case, the test certificate must be an official certificate sent by a medical institution as an attached file and not a photograph.

Q 4: What is considered to be a "medical institution" by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare?

A 4: It refers to the name of the institution that conducted the test. As for the specified format provided by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, either the signature of the doctor or imprint of a seal of the medical institution is required.

Q 5: Please explain how we can determine the valid testing period (specimens collected within the 72 hours before departure).

A 5: The testing period is considered to be within 72 hours from the departure time of the first flight sector. If you exit the airport at your connecting city, it will be considered a stopover/stay and your test needs to be within 72 hours from the departure time of your connecting flight.

Examples showing which city is considered to be the starting point of the testing period:

International flight → International flight:
・Vancouver → Seattle → Haneda
Testing needs to be within 72 hours from the Vancouver scheduled departure time.

Domestic flight → International flight:
・Seattle → San Francisco → Haneda
Testing needs to be within 72 hours from the Seattle scheduled departure time.

Domestic flight → International flight:
・New York (JFK) → Los Angeles → Haneda
Testing needs to be within 72 hours from the New York scheduled departure time.
*If you exit the Los Angeles airport, it will be considered a stopover/stay and testing needs to be within 72 hours from the Los Angeles scheduled departure.

Q 6: It says that it is mandatory to carry a smartphone when entering Japan but are there any exceptions based on the age of the passenger?

A 6: As it is required to carry a smartphone and install all required apps advised by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for all passengers over the age of 13. If you do not have a smartphone, you will be asked to rent a smartphone at the arrival airport.

However, if the passenger is 12 years old or younger and does not have a smartphone, they do not need to rent it and will be managed under the supervision of his or her parent/guardian. (If the passenger is 12 years old or younger but still has their own smartphone, they need to register the required apps.)
