Japan eases entry restrictions for eligible travelers from June 1, 2022

Effective June 1, 2022 (00:00 am, Japan time), the Japanese government has announced updated border measures for eligible* travelers who are currently allowed to enter (*Click here for more details).

There are three groups, Blue, Yellow, and Red, and based on which country/region the traveler enters from, along with vaccination status, the arrival testing and quarantine requirements differ.

(*) From June 1, 2022 (00:00 am, Japan time), the U.S. belongs to the Blue group. Click here to view grouping for other countries/regions.

In addition, starting June 10, 2022 (00:00, Japan time), foreign nationals who are newly entering Japan short-term, for tourism purposes are allowed to enter from countries/regions belonging to the Blue group, provided that the traveler has obtained a certificate of completion of registration to the ERFS system (Japanese page) through a receiving organization (such as a travel agency) along with obtaining a visa. Other eligible foreign nationals including those newly entering Japan for a short-term stay (less than three months) for purposes of business and employment, or long-term stay also need to apply for a visa and have the receiving organization (company/organization) in Japan complete ERFS registration. Regardless of which group (Blue, Yellow, or Red) the traveler’s departing country is, all requirements which need to be prepared prior to departure (incl. pre-departure testing, Written Pledge, and Questionnaire) remain in effect. Please refer to the checklist for details.

● Group Blue

Regardless of vaccination status:
 Arrival testing: not required
 Self-quarantine: not required

● Group Yellow

If fully vaccinated and boosted (received a 3rd dose):
 Arrival testing: not required
 Self-quarantine: not required

If not fully vaccinated and boosted (did not receive a 3rd dose):
 Arrival testing: required
 Self-quarantine: required, in principle for 5 days after entering Japan (if the test* taken after the 3rd day is negative, no further self-quarantine)

● Group Red

If fully vaccinated and boosted (received a 3rd dose):
 Arrival testing: required
 Self-quarantine: required, in principle for 5 days after entering Japan (if the test* taken after the 3rd day is negative, no further self-quarantine)

If not fully vaccinated and boosted (did not receive a 3rd dose):
 Arrival testing: required
 Quarantine at the accommodation facility: required for 3 days after entering Japan (if the test* taken after the 3rd day is negative, no further quarantine)

* The testing method required is either a PCR or antigen quantitative test

(( Points to Note ))

• Public transportation can be used to get to your final destination (or location of self-quarantine, if required) within 24 hours of entering Japan. However, quarantine procedures are taking longer than expected at airports in Japan so please be sure to arrange transportation (domestic flights, trains, etc.) well after your arrival time.

• For vaccine certificates issued in countries other than Japan, the name, date of birth, vaccine name or manufacturer, vaccination date, and the number of doses must be stated either in English or Japanese. Click here for other conditions for the vaccine certificate.
