City Information

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, with a population of 13,649,120 (as of December 1, 2016), and is the most highly populated metropolis in the country. It is in roughly the center of the Japanese archipelago and has an area of 2,187 km2, making it the third smallest prefecture in the country. It is a long shape, spreading out to the east and west, with Shinjuku, Shibuya, and other wards packed with corporate and commercial buildings in the east, creating one of the most cutting-edge urban areas in the world. In contrast, the Tama area in the west that is conveniently accessed by only an hour-long train ride from the center of Tokyo, has been developed as a commuter town. Okutama retains a lush natural environment with mountains and lakes. The Izu Islands (such as Oshima, Niijima, and Shikinejima) floating on the Pacific Ocean are also a part of Tokyo. The Ogasawara Islands that were registered as a UNESCO world natural heritage site in June 2011 are also in Tokyo and have a distinctive ecosystem and culture.

Although Narita Airport is Japan's air gateway and is only a 36 min. ride to the Tokyo city center on the fastest route, it is actually in Chiba prefecture. Chiba prefecture lies adjacent to the Tokyo Metropolitan area. It offers excellent transportation access and is visited by many overseas tourists. The most popular of its attractions is the Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, Chiba, that lets you enjoy an extraordinary world of fantasy. The Tokyo Disney Resort area contains everything from theme parks such as Tokyo Disneyland with its symbolic Cinderella's castle and Tokyo Disney Sea that is themed on the ocean to official hotels such as the Disney Ambassador Hotel and the Ikspiari multipurpose commercial complex where you can enjoy shopping, movies, and more -- too much entertainment to enjoy in only a single day. This is one essential tourist spot for visits to Japan. There are shuttle buses that take you directly to Tokyo Disney Resort from Narita Airport, so you can go there directly after entering Japan.

Another spot is Naritasan Shinshoji Temple that is about 10 min. by train from Narita Airport. Year after year, this temple is on the list of top ranking spots for first shrine or temple visit after the New Year. Immediately after exiting the train, you will see a path to the temple that stretches for 800 meters. The path is lined with eateries and souvenir shops, so you can experience a charming Japanese scene. Walking along this path, your nose will be tickled by the salty-sweet aroma of eel being grilled. Eel is a local Naritasan specialty, and there are many eel restaurants along the path. When you reach the end of the path, you will arrive at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. It was founded in 940 and has continued to carry out the holy fire dedication ritual every single day since to pray for relief from suffering and fulfillment of wishes of worshipers. It is a popular tourist spot that ranks in the top for popular trip ranking on TripAdvisor that is the world's largest travel review website. Chiba is also home to Funabashi Andersen Park that ranked 9th in the top ten theme parks in Japan in 2016, Mother Farm that holds animals events and offers fruit picking, and tons of other attractive spots where you can fully enjoy the nature of the four seasons and fun with animals.

Aside from the classic tourist destinations, you can also choose spots that match your travel plans to enjoy a fulfilling trip to Japan.
