Junsai picking experience in Mitane town
Picking experience in Mitane town, Japan's largest producer of junsai
Junsai is a water plant that grows in ponds and swamps with clear water. It looks like a lotus plant and has edible buds covered with a gelatinous coating. Known as the emeralds of the water, these buds have a smooth texture and a pleasant feeling in the throat. These refreshing, green buds are the perfect food to celebrate the arrival of summer. You can enjoy handpicking the buds one by one as you pull your way through a 50- to 60-centimeter-deep pond in an exclusive small box-shaped boat. After picking, you can take them home as a souvenir. The town of Mitane in Akita is the largest producer of junsai.
Moritake Onsen Village
Since hot spring water suddenly gushed out from a rice field during oil extraction in 1952, Moritake has been a popular hot spring town among people. Because of its high salt content, Moritake hot spring is known as a "salty onsen" by the locals and is appreciated for its effects in preventing the body from feeling cold after taking a bath, while also promoting beautiful skin. The town is lined with a number of hot spring hotels and restaurants that serve local specialty junsai dishes. Other attractions in the area include Ishikurayama Park, a great viewing spot for autumn leaves; Sozaburonuma Park known for its beautiful lawn; and a 36-hole golf course.
