A must-ride journey of a lifetime on a local train on the JR Gono Line from Akita to a World Heritage Site

Resort Shirakami is a scenic train that weaves its way along the JR Gono Line through stunning coastal scenery of blue sea and green mountains. It is a great way to visit the Shirakami-Sanchi Mountain Range World Heritage Site, and Akitashirakami Station is the gateway to the range from the Akita side. The train slows down at several scenic points to allow you to fully enjoy the breathtaking experience.

Resort Shirakami: A popular train

The Gono Line is very popular for its special trains called Resort Shirakami. This line with 43 stations stretches 147.2 kilometers between Kawabe Station in Aomori and Higashi-Noshiro Station in Akita. These trains attract tourists with a variety of features, such as observation carriages with large windows and box seats designed for groups. One train also has a car with a counter bar offering local sake and sweets.

Hachimori Isaribi Onsen "Hatahata-kan"

One of the main features of this hotel, 3 minutes' walk from Akita Shirakami Station, is the magnificent views of the Japan Sea and the Shirakami-Sanchi Mountain Range. It has a wide variety of bathing features, including natural hot spring water, saunas and outdoor baths, one of which has a wooden bathtub shaped like a hatahata (sand fish) fishing boat, an Akita specialty. It is really a relaxation heaven, and from some of the baths, you can bathe and enjoy a panoramic view of the sea at the same time. This hotel is also popular for the fresh local seafood and vegetables offered in the cuisine inside the hotel, and also in the Buriko local food market adjacent to it.
