Naha City Traditional Arts and Crafts Center where you can get to know, shop and experience five different traditional crafts of Okinawa

The Naha City Traditional Arts and Crafts Center can be found in a building located on Kokusai Dori street in the heart of Naha City in Okinawa Prefecture. In addition to learning about the history of the local crafts and trying your hand at making your own, you can also enjoy observing and shopping for the fine works of the Okinawan artists on display. There are five hands-on traditional craft workshops to choose from: Ryukyu glass, Tsuboya pottery, Ryukyu Bingata dye cloth, Shuri-ori weaving and Ryukyu lacquerware. Conveniently located in the center of the city, it is a perfect option to drop by.

Special exhibition room that showcases masterpieces of Living National Treasures

The special exhibition room showcases a collection of historical craftworks and some of the finest art pieces of Okinawan traditional crafts, including Ryukyu lacquerware, Ryukyu Bingata dye cloth, Shuri-ori weaving, Tsuboya pottery and Ryukyu glass. Okinawa's unique climate and culture have nurtured the development of distinctive styles, colors and textures of the local craftworks. The room also lets you get an up-close look at traditional crafts, including masterpieces by four Living National Treasures, accompanied by easy-to-understand explanations on the making processes as well as techniques and the history of each craft via monitors installed in the room.

The shop offers selected artworks individually handmade by skilled artisans in Naha, which make for a perfect souvenir or gift. You can find all of the five Okinawan art handicrafts including products from Okuhara Glass, the oldest Ryukyu glass factory in Okinawa, as well as Ryukyu Bingata, Shuri-ori, Ryukyu lacquerware and Tsuboya pottery.

Create your own Okinawan traditional craft at hands-on workshops

The facility offers a full range of workshops where you can try your hand at making Ryukyu lacquerware, Ryukyu Bingata, Shuri-ori, Tsuboya pottery and Ryukyu glass. You can choose from a variety of attractive craft experiences such as making Tsuboya shisa pottery figurines and dyeing coasters using the Bingata technique. Depending on the program, it only takes as little as 10 minutes to complete, allowing you to select the one that fits your schedule.
