Immigration Restrictions and Quarantine Measures Implemented as Border Control Measures by Various Countries and Regions

Departing passengers are kindly requested to confirm before travel the latest information provided by the government bodies, embassy/consulate, health authorities, etc. at their destination and transit point.

You can complete quarantine procedures in advance on MySOS (the health and location monitoring app for those entering Japan) or MySOS web. If you then present the relevant screen in the app or web during check-in and upon arrival, you can enjoy a smoother experience when completing procedures and will not be required to submit any quarantine documentation for inspection.

Applicable passengers: All passengers entering/returning to Japan via Haneda/Narita Airport
Requirement: Applications must be made no later than 6 hours prior to the scheduled arrival date/time.

Upon Entering Japan (Not Applicable to Passengers Connecting to Other Countries/Regions)

  • Test Certificates
    For details about the test certificate requirements, please see the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website.
    Please confirm in advance the designated testing method, specimen collection method, and testing period.
  • Visit Japan Web Service
    An online service has been launched that enables passengers entering Japan (including Japanese nationals returning to Japan) to perform all the immigration procedures (including quarantine, immigration and customs declarations) in one go upon entering the country. For details, please see the Digital Agency website (Japanese page).

Passengers entering Japan are subject to strict emergency and precautionary measures. Please understand that it may take some time until you can complete the quarantine procedures and other post-arrival procedures.

Quarantine After Entry

From 0:00 am (JST) on June 1, 2022, on-arrival test, self-quarantine period and place of accommodation after entry into Japan may be changed according to the grouping ("Red", "Yellow" and "Blue" categories) of the countries/regions in which the entrants stayed within 14 days before the day of return to Japan or the day of application for landing on Japan and whether they obtain a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

Precautions regarding COVID-19 test certificate

Given the spread of the new variants of COVID-19 infections overseas, the government's border measures have been further strengthened.

All customers entering Japan, including customers of Japanese nationality, will not be allowed to land in Japan unless they submit a valid certificate of a negative COVID-19 test result. If you cannot confirm a valid certificate during the boarding procedure, we will refuse boarding according to the instructions of the Japanese government.

In addition, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare strongly recommends the use of the prescribed format, so please download it from the following page and prepare it.

There are many cases where passengers providing evidence which does not properly specify the type of specimen tested, method of inspection, and/or the time and date of the inspection. There also have been several instances where the lack of required information indicated by medical institutions have led to passengers being denied boarding.

Inspection Time and Date: COVID-19 inspection was not taken 72 hours prior to departure
Type of Specimen Tested: The test method conducted and/or documentation wording differs to that as instructed on the official homepage of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. (Exact wording and phrasing as indicated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is required.)

(Common Mistakes)

  • A nasopharyngeal swab is a valid form of testing.
  • A pharyngeal swab is not considered a valid form of testing.
  • Inaccurate English wording/phrasing within the documentation (i.e. Use of abbreviations within documentation etc.)

Method of Inspection: The documentation wording differs to that as instructed on the official homepage of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. (Exact wording and phrasing as indicated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is required.)

Entry Visa: Passenger is not in possession of a valid visa. (i.e. Type of visa does not currently permit entry into Japan/ Valid time period for visa has expired, etc)

For the document, we recommend using the format specified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to prevent deficiencies.

    Please note that, if you intend to leave the airport or stay at an accommodation facility outside the airport when at a transit point, you must take your test within the 72 hours before the departure time of your connecting flight.

You will be required to install the necessary apps on your smartphone to demonstrate your unfailing self-isolation at your home, hotel or another location for 14 days after arriving in Japan. If you do not have a smartphone that you can use, you will be required to rent one in accordance with the Quarantine Act.

Due to the landing refusal added by the Ministry of Justice, the following customers will not be able to enter Japan.

Installing MySOS

All passengers entering Japan are required to register for MySOS, an Health and Location Monitoring application.

Fast Track

Please use the Fast Track to pre-register for quarantine procedures at the arrival airport.
Fast Track registration is available through MySOS.
For registration, passport number, vaccination certificate, and COVID-19 negative certificate are required.

  • Applicable to passengers entering Narita International Airport, Haneda Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport, Kansai International Airport, and Fukuoka Airport.
  • Please complete the pre-registration on the App at least 6 hours prior to the scheduled arrival date and time of your flight.

Information about PCR Tests for International Travel from or to Japan

Get information on medical facilities offering PCR tests for customers traveling internationally from or to Japan.

For passengers arriving at Haneda and Narita Airport ("Amazon Locker" for entering passengers)

Currently, when entering Japan from overseas, quarantine measures such as waiting in accommodation facilities secured by quarantine stations are taken as emergency evacuation and preventive measures.
"Amazon Locker" (receiving locker) are installed at Haneda and Narita Airport for overseas visitors.
If you purchase items on Amazon's website in advance, you can pick them up at the receiving locker in Haneda Airport and bring them to your accommodation.

Passengers to Whom Entry Restrictions Apply

Non-Japanese nationals who stayed in restricted areas within 14 days prior to their arrival in Japan:

After March 1, 2022, for new entry for short-term stays and new entry for long-term stays for commercial and employment purposes, the person in charge of acceptance in Japan will prescribe in the immigrant health confirmation system(ERFS). If you complete the application, you will be able to enter Japan in principle, assuming that there are "special circumstances".

Also Visa exemption measures for Hong Kong and Macau, and the Republic of Korea are suspended.

Starting from 0:00AM (JST) March 21, 2020, all efficacy of single or multiple entry visas issued by March 20, 2020 at Japanese Embassies or Consulates in all areas of the Schengen member states* or Ireland, Andora, Iran, United Kingdom, Egypt, Cyprus, Croatia, San Marino, the Vatican, Bulgaria, Monaco or Romania are terminated and visa exemption measures are suspended. These measures will apply for the time being.

Starting from 0:00AM (JST) March 27, 2020, all efficacy of single or multiple entry visas issued by March 27, 2020 at Japanese Embassies or consulates in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Israel, Qatar, Democratic Republic of the Congo or Bahrain will be terminated and visa exemption measures will be suspended for the time being.

Starting from 0:00AM (JST) on April 3, 2020, valid primary and multiple-entry visas issued by the Embassies or Consulates General of Japan located in any country except those countries subject to immigration restrictions under the Immigration Control Act will be suspended. This will also apply to visa exemption measures for these countries. The suspensions will apply for the time being.

From 0:00AM (JST) on April 8, 2022, visa waiver will be temporarily suspended for the following countries:.

Once all pre-registration and screening have been completed, the app screen will turn green and Fast Track will be available. The app screen will turn blue if any of the following apply.

  • The certificate of COVID-19 negative test result is received which is conducted within 72 hours prior to departure from the country of stay in the "blue" category.
  • The certificate of COVID-19 negative test result is received which is conducted within 72 hours prior to departure from the country of stay in the "yellow" category and have the proof of the third vaccination.

Please present the app screen to the staff when checking in at the airport.
If the app screen is yellow or red, or you do not have the app installed, please provide a certificate of COVID-19 negative test result in paper or on electronic devices.

COVID-19 Test at the Airport Quarantine

This program is available to those who arrived from the "Red" category country/region, or to those who arrived from the "Yellow" category country/region and do not have a vaccination certificate.Please refer to the "After Entry to Japan" guide for details.

  • Please proceed to a designated specimen collection booth. Spit 1 to 2 ml of saliva into a container.
  • If you struggle to produce any saliva, etc., you can also collect a specimen by inserting a cotton swab into your nose. (*1)
  • After you have taken the test, please go to the waiting area inside the airport and wait there until you receive your test result.
  • It will take around 2 to 3 hours until you receive your test result. (*2)
  • *1.Please avoid eating or drinking anything 30 minutes before collecting your saliva specimen.
  • *2.Depending on the situation, you may have to wait longer to receive your result if you have to re-take the test.

Customers Connecting in Japan between International Flights

Travelers who are not entering Japan and transferring directly to a third country by transit, are not required to submit any documents and undergo inspections in Japan. Nonetheless, travelers are still subject to the travel/entry restrictions and requirements of their final destination.
However, the following cases require entry into Japan. Please be informed that foreign nationals arriving from prohibited countries will not be allowed to enter Japan.

  • Transferring between Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) and Narita International Airport
  • Travelers with a connecting flight out of Narita International Airport the following day

Customers Connecting in Japan from an International Flight to a Domestic Flight

On your arrival date, quarantine procedures and other post-arrival procedures may take some time to complete, and you may have to wait a while to receive the appropriate guidance. In this instance, you may not be able to board your reserved connecting flight if you have one. We kindly request that you leave sufficient leeway when reserving a connecting flight. Please kindly check the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website (Japanese page) for details.

During Your Stay in Japan

This program is available to those who arrived from the "Red" category country/region, or to those who arrived from the "Yellow" category country/region and do not have a vaccination certificate.

  • A negative result of the test at the airport quarantine will allow the use of public transportation only for the purpose of staying at home within 24 hours after the test.
  • The public health center under whose jurisdiction your address in Japan falls (as written on the online questionnaire you submitted to quarantine upon entering Japan) will contact you by email or phone every day for 7 days after your arrival to confirm your health.
