Kora Taisha Shrine

Mount Kora stands on the westernmost edge point of the Mino Mountain Range at a height of 312 meters, where you will find Kora Taisha Shrine, a former National Shrine and a major shrine in the Chikugo region.

Warding off bad luck and prolonging life

Mino Mountain Range where a major shrine in the Chikugo region stands. By the end of Paleozoic Era (about 200 to 300 million years ago), the mountain range was formed by repeated fault movements in East-West direction.

Mino Mountain Range stretches west to east for about 30km where Mount Takatori, Mount Hosshin, Mount Mino, and Mount Kora stands out like a folding screen and it is called “Byobu-yama”. There are thousands of ancient tombs, which indicates that these mountains have special significance to ancient peoples on this area. Kurume has many historical ruins, as well as temples and shrines with long history.

A major shrine in the Chikugo region

Kora Taisha Shrine is famous for worshiper to be blessed with prolonging life. This sanctuary was built in 400 A.D. as the leading shrine in the region with its Engishi-nai Myojin Taisha. The current sanctuary is designated as a significant cultural asset by the government, and is one of the largest sanctuaries in Kyushu. And other treasure such as “Kogoishi Rock” as designated as Important Cultural Asset and Historical Site. Kentosai (votive lantern festival) that held on August is highlight of summer in the region, where you can see the beauty of red torii with as a background of lit lantern and night view on the other side.
