Cherry Blossom Tree-lined Street and Rape Flower Road

An 11-kilometer stretch of amazing cherry trees and rape fields in Hachirogata, Akita

This is an 11-kilometer stretch of breathtakingly beautiful cherry trees and rape fields that never fails to impress visitors between late April and early May. Located along Prefectural Road 298 that runs through Ogata Village, it was created from reclaimed land that formed the bed of Lake Hachirogata. Approximately 3,700 cherry trees of several varieties come into bloom to amaze the viewer with the contrast of pretty pink petals and vivid yellow rape flowers.

Cherry and Rape Flower Festival

This festival is held annually between late April and early May during the peak season of cherry blossoms and rape flowers, featuring a variety of family-friendly attractions, such as flower picking and a mini steam train ride in the vast 1.8-hectare rape field. A number of visitors can also attend other events at different locations, including a festival at a Seitaikei (ecosystem) Park and a local gourmet market at Sanchoku Center Katanomise.

Hotel Sun Rural Ogata

This hotel is located adjacent to the main venue of the Cherry and Rape Flower Festival. It offers a Japanese and Western buffet breakfast featuring rape flowers during the festival period. The restaurant on the top floor boasts a great view and delicious dishes created using local ingredients. A communal bath is also located on the top floor, which uses a very rare type of natural hot spring that comes through peat. Have a relaxing time in this special bath while enjoying the views of Mount Moriyoshi and Mount Taihei to the east and the setting sun to the west.

Polder Museum of OGATA-MURA

Ogata Village is located on the land reclaimed from the Hachirogata Lagoon, which was once the second largest lake following Lake Biwa. This museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the history of the village, the reclamation work of the lagoon, and the local farming and rich natural features of the village, using dioramas and visual images. Other features of the museums are Oga Peninsula and Ogata Geopark. Admission to this museum is free during the period of the Cherry and Rape Flower Festival to offer a variety of fun events for families. If you would like to learn more about the reclamation and farming of the area, why not book a volunteer guide for a tour in the museum and at some major locations in the village?
