All Nippon Airways, China Eastern Airlines to Conclude Comprehensive Commercial Agreement - Code-share Operations Starting 1 February, 1999 to be First between Japan and China- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASETOKYO-12 November 1998 All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) and China Eastern Airlines Co., Ltd. (CES) , announced that they will enter a comprehensive commercial agreement, to include code-share operations. The agreement will be the first of its kind between a Japanese and a Chinese carrier. ANA President and CEO, Kichisaburo Nomura and CES President, Li Zhong-ming are scheduled to sign the agreement at a special ceremony to be held in Tokyo on 13 November. It is expected that by linking ANA's network with that of CES, traffic between the two countries will increase, further enhancing the ties between the two nations. Code-share operations will begin on 1 February, 1999, subject to Japanese and Chinese government approval. Initially, there will be a total of 18 code-share flights a week (9 operated by ANA, 9 operated by CES) on Osaka-Shanghai and Osaka-Qingdao-Beijing routes. Both airlines plan to actively expand code-share operations further in the future. In addition to code-sharing, ANA and CES plan to start a connection service for passengers transferring flights at Shanghai and Kansai International airports. The service will make it easier for customers to connect on to domestic flights in China and Japan.
