ANA Announces Winners of 'Aozora'
Environmental Picture Book Competition

TOKYO, December 12, 2003 The ANA Group today announced the winner and runners-up of its first International Picture Book Competition, which was designed to raise awareness of environmental issues. The competition, named 'Aozora' (Japanese for 'Blue Skies') was supported by Japan UNESCO and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. It ran from May 31st to August 31st, during which time 431 entries were received from 12 countries, across an age range of 4 to 80.

The Welsh-born novelist and naturalist, CW Nicol headed the panel of 4 judges, whose decision can be found on page 2. The first prize went to Azuma Kusakado of Tokyo, for her work entitled 'Omoi Hitotsu' (A Thought for the Forests). She will be invited to the ANA Headquarters in Tokyo to receive her prize on January 13th, 2004.

From spring 2004, Ms Kusakado's picture book will be given out to children onboard ANA flights, and distributed to schools and kindergartens in Japan and overseas. Original works of the runners-up will be exhibited at airports nationwide and throughout the world.

The Aozora Picture Book Competition is just one part of ANA's outreach programme aimed at raising environmental awareness, especially among the young. ANA was ranked 15th out of almost 4,000 Japanese companies in a survey on environmental management practices conducted by the Nikkei Shimbun (Japan's most respected financial newspaper) published yesterday. It was the only airline to come within the top 45 ranked companies.
