TOKYO / JOHANNESBURG March 26, 2007 - ANA and South African Airways have filed an Alliance Agreement with their respective governments under which possible areas of closer cooperation will be explored.
The two airlines will consider the opportunity to codeshare on flights between South Africa and Japan via Hong Kong.
Any codeshare service between South Africa and Japan via Hong Kong would be subject to government approval. If granted, it would allow ANA to put its flight code, NH, on South African Airways’ daily flight between Johannesburg and Hong Kong, and South African Airways to put its flight code, SA, on ANA’s daily flight between Hong Kong and Osaka’s Kansai Airport. In this way, the two Star Alliance member airlines would create the only network linking Japan and Africa, giving customers the convenience of only one flight code for their journey between the two countries, as well as through baggage.
SAA and ANA linked their frequent flyer programmes in April 2006, allowing mutual mileage accrual and redemption across each other’s networks. Any codeshare flight would also be subject to the same mileage accrual and redemption.
Southern Africa is famed for its natural beauty and is home to many world-renowned tourist attractions, such as Victoria Falls, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town. South Africa will also host the 2010 Soccer World Cup, which is expected to boost demand for tourism. Furthermore, South Africa’s emerging economy is also attracting many Japanese companies, and economic ties between the two countries are expected to deepen.
Going forward, ANA and South African Airways will explore other areas of co-operation to better serve the needs of their customers and strengthen ties between the two countries.
