1. ANA Safety Management System

ANA has a Safety Management System (SMS) which complies with ICAO Annex19 in place, and each of the different aspects of this system are stipulated in its Safety Management Manual.
SMS is "a systematic approach to safety management, and compromises the requisite organizational structure, accountabilities, implementation responsibilities,policies and procedures. SMS consists of the following four components:

  • “Safety Policy and Objectives” to implement plans to continually improve the level of safety.
  • “Safety Risk Management” to identify hazards and ensure that an acceptable level of safety is maintained
  • “Safety Assurance” to continuously monitor and regularly evaluate the level of safety
  • “Safety Promotion” to raise the safety awareness of each employee and improve the level of safety through safety-related activities and awareness-raising.

On top of this,all the staff at ANA, from top-level management to those on the frontline, work together as a team to manage safety. To this end, each of the organizations at ANA (including flight operations, engineering and maintenance, in-flight services, airports, and cargo) take steps to make sure that our business management policy to guarantee safety is both understood and implemented by all staff. At the same time, they have clear lines of responsibility and means of communication in order to facilitate smooth communication between management and the frontline/divisions.

2. Overall picture and components of SMS

The SMS system consists of "Safety Policy and Objectives”, "Safety Risk Management," "Safety Assurance (monitoring safety processes)," and "Safety Promotion (fostering safety culture)," all of which are interrelated within the SMS system. A strong SMS cycle will help maintain and improve safety. All Group employees involved in operations perform a function of the SMS, and safe operations are maintained by ensuring that each and every employee performs his or her duties.

3. Overview of ANA's Safety Functions and Roles

ANA Group has established safety targets in four areas: not only the safety of flight operations but also the customers’ safety and the employees’ (workers’) safety, and security.
