Supporting the Preservation of the Udono Reed Bed

ANA Trading Co., Ltd.

ANA Trading Co., Ltd. is involved in a project to preserve Udono Yoshihara, a reed bed on the banks of the Yodo River in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture. This reed bed is a valuable habitat for endangered plants as well as various insects, birds, and small animals. The reeds not only absorb CO2 from the air, they also absorb nitrogen and phosphorus from the river to improve water quality, so they have a positive effect on the health of the ecosystem.

However, if the reeds that wither in the winter are left to decay, the nitrogen and phosphorus that they absorbed will return to the river. Therefore, ANA Trading is participating in activities to cut down the withered reeds and use them as raw material to produce paper. This paper is then used to make business cards and other everyday products.

ISO14001 Certification Initiatives

ANA Engineering & Maintenance Center (Narita)

ANA Engineering & Maintenance Center (Narita) acquired ISO14001 certification for its environmental management system in 2001, and has been continuously making efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and waste since. These efforts have yielded steady improvements, and results for the 2012 fiscal year were as follows:

  • ①Initiatives to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Aircraft
The department in charge of aircraft maintenance washed the internal components of aircraft engines to restore engine performance, which resulted in improved fuel efficiency. This led to a decrease in CO2 emissions of approximately 36 tons.
  • ②Initiatives to Reduce CO2 Emissions in Business Operations
Meticulous management of energy use (electricity, natural gas, and fuel oil) and energy conservation measures led to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Compared to the previous fiscal year, there were reductions in the usage of electricity (-4%), gas (-5%), and fuel oil (-8%), which resulted in a decrease in CO2 emissions of approximately 18 tons.
  • ③Initiatives to Promote Waste Reduction, Recycling, and Reuse
By reusing copy paper in offices and recycling worn-out seat covers which were previously discarded, the amount of general waste was reduced by 40%(approximately 24 tons) compared to the previous fiscal year.

“Stop Engine Idling” Campaign and Effective Water Use

ANA Airport Handling Co., Ltd.

ANA Airport Handling Co., Ltd.(AAH) is continuing a program that was launched in June 2012 to stop engine idling on airport shuttle buses in order to reduce CO2 emissions. To achieve this goal without causing discomfort for passengers during hot weather, AAH employees shared creative ideas for preventing rapid temperature rises in the passenger compartment. As a result, AAH has been able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 5 tons per month.

In addition, AAH has continued to focus on using water more effectively since September 2009. Approximately six tons of water that was left on board aircraft after their last flights of each day had previously been discarded. As a result of an employee proposal, the remaining water from aircraft arriving at Haneda Airport was repurposed for cleaning aircraft maintenance facilities, etc. In the four years since this initiative began, approximately 8,300 tons of water have been put to more effective use.

AAH will continue to contribute to environmental conservation through these activities while considering the comfort of passengers.

Reducing CO2 Emissions through Promotion of Energy-Efficient Driving

Overseas Courier Service Co., Ltd.

As an international express delivery company, Overseas Courier Service Co., Ltd.(OCS) operates a large number of delivery vehicles. The company has been promoting initiatives such as improving the efficiency of its daily pickup and delivery operations and gradually switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition, OCS adopted a motto to educate its employees about safe energy-efficient driving. The company also attached “Eco Drive” stickers on all delivery vehicles to both increase employee awareness and showcase its commitment to customers.

Collecting, Sorting, and Recycling Waste Paper from Aircraft

ANA Fukuoka Airport Co., Ltd.

ANA Fukuoka Airport has been implementing measures to reduce waste, and these measures have been further strengthened from June of 2014. In order to reduce the total amount of waste, efforts to collect and sort waste paper (newspapers, magazines, etc.) for recycling were started. This has reduced the amount of waste that is generated each day by an average of about 20%.

Since resources which had previously been incinerated as waste are now being reused, ANA Fukuoka Airport is also contributing to reducing the amount of CO2 that is emitted from the waste disposal process.

Team Inflight Services Eco-First Survey during Environment Month

ANA Inflight Services Center

Japan's Ministry of the Environment designates the month of June as Environment Month. The ANA Inflight Services Center conducts a survey of ANA Group cabin attendants to solicit ideas for reducing CO2 emissions through cabin service improvements, etc., as part of its environmental contribution activities during this month. Based on the feedback from frontline employees, a wide range of ideas has been received, including reviewing the amount of items to be loaded on aircraft and removing low-demand items. Going forward, the Inflight Services Center will explore these ideas in detail and develop them into concrete measures.
