Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum

Sakamoto Ryoma, born in Tosa, was a patriot at the end of the Edo Period and dedicated his life to early modern Japan. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum was opened in November 1991 to commemorate his achievements, and collect and exhibit items relating to him.
Ever since, Ryoma’s fans have found themselves coming back again and again to the memorial museum and it is now a much loved Kochi tourist spot. However, from fall 2016 the main building underwent renovation and a new building was built to deal with the aging of the facilities, and to enhance the museum’s research function and exhibitions. In April 2018, the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, it was reopened as a new Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum.
