Perry Road
Commodore Matthew C. Perry, who arrived in Japan on the "Black Ships" at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), was said to have walked on this pathway located in the city of Shimoda in Shizuoka Prefecture. Lined with beautiful willow trees and stone pavements, the rows of Western-style buildings and old houses from the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods exude an exotic atmosphere. The area is a popular tourist spot with various antique shops and cafes.
Ryugukutsu cave
The Ryugukutsu cave in Toji, Shimoda is a natural phenomenon formed over a long time by the lapping of ocean waves. A part of the cave's ceiling has broken away, creating a heart-shaped skylight about 50 ｍeters in diameter. The yellow-brownish volcanic lapillus on the cave wall, the clear blue seawater filling up the bottom of the skylight, and the gorgeous blue sky all create a setting that is unique to this spot.
Sand ski hill
Next to Ryugukutsu is a small sand ski hill, a 30 degree-angle slope about 70 meters long and 100 meters wide. Climb up to the top of the sand dune and ski down all the way while gazing the amazing view for an exhilarating experience.
Izu Shirahama Beach
With white sands and clear blue waters, the Izu Shirahama Beach is vast and gives you a sense of openness. Stretching 800 meters from north to south, it is the largest swimming beach on the Izu Peninsula and bustling with beachgoers during the summer. The beach is also a famous spot known for great surfing conditions.
