The Blue Pond offers varying scenery for the four seasons. Spring brings fresh greenery, and summer enhances the clear cobalt blue color of the pond, while the bright yellow autumn leaves of the surrounding trees mesmerize visitors. Winter is especially breathtaking as the area around the pond transforms into a snowy wonderland. From around November to April, as the snow covers the water surface, an elaborate illumination display is held instead. It is a popular sightseeing spot that offers new attractions in each season, allowing it to be enjoyed again and again.
Cycle around must-see spots in Biei
Explore the scenic beauty of Biei by bicycle on the Blue Pond Cycling Course. The 20-kilometer route starts from Biei Station, with stops including the Blue Pond, and ends at Shirogane Onsen (hot springs). Enjoy seeing the Biei River gradually turning into a beautiful cobalt blue. Confident cyclists can start from Biei Station, while casual travelers are recommended to rent a bicycle at the Biei Roadside Rest Area Shirogane BIRKE and start there. Shirogane BIRKE is a great spot for shopping and dining, with hamburgers made with locally sourced ingredients and Blue Pond souvenir goods. You can also participate in guided tours (spring and autumn only).

Shirogane Onsen, the final stop of the cycling course, is the perfect place to enjoy Biei’s rich natural environment while rejuvenating. Soak in the hot spring bath and soothe your tired body after cycling. At the center of Shirogane Onsen is Shirohige Falls, another popular tourist spot along with the Blue Pond. Sometimes called “Blue River” for its mystical river surface, the gushing subterranean waters cascading into the clear stream is a sight to behold. Enjoy the luxurious flow of time as you bask in the hot spring and the incredible surrounding nature.
