The magnificent seasonal scenery of the Dawn Redwood Avenue

Save to List

A beautiful avenue lined with dawn redwoods that brim with the colors of the four seasons

Stretching out along an approximately 2.4-kilometer straight road is the Dawn Redwood (metasequoia) Avenue leading to the Makino Highland located in the northwestern part of Shiga Prefecture. Every season, visitors are afforded a stunning view: fresh verdure and greenery in spring, lush greens in summer, the vivid colors of autumn leaves and the bare trees covered in snow that resembles pretty snow flowers. In harmony with the Nosaka mountain range visible in the background, it creates stunning picturesque scenes. The avenue was selected among Street Tree 100 New Scenery of Japan by Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper in 1994.

A magnificent driving route selected among Japan's top 100 fall foliage locations

Driving through this beautiful row of metasequoia trees by car or on a motorbike is quite a blissful experience. Make the most of your scenic drive. The avenue is currently lined with some 500 dawn redwood trees. Planted in 1981, the trees have been grown by the hands of local people into their current beautiful appearance. The views of the avenue are attractive at any time of the year, but particularly so during the fall color season when a romantic atmosphere sets in. The trees covered with snow in wintertime creates a fantastical setting that gives you the illusion of being in a movie scene. Next to the avenue is the Makino Pic-Land where you can enjoy picking seasonal fruit.
