Magical Lantern Festivals Light Up Japan

Typically held in August throughout Japan, dark rivers are illuminated with the warm glow of paper lanterns during the Toro Nagashi festival. During this festival, when the spirits of one’s ancestors briefly return home, the lanterns help guide them back to the afterlife. After writing their personal thoughts and messages of peace on the lanterns, people set them afloat in a solemn procession over bodies of water. One of the popular events on Japan’s calendar, these Japanese lantern festivals also have a strong community connection. Reflecting the local culture and climate, they may serve as a memorial honoring specific events or people. Guiding the Spirits of Loved Ones Home

Japan’s Toro Nagashi festival sees many events held in the first half of August, when it is believed that ancestors return home for a brief visit. Floating candle-lit toro (paper lanterns) down the river, people safely guide the spirits of loved ones back to the afterlife, while also praying for world peace.

Hiroshima Shines with Lanterns of Peace

A lantern ceremony will be held in early August to pray for peace when the city holds its annual Toro Nagashi festival. A splendid display arises from the park as colorful lanterns bearing messages of peace travel down the Motoyasu River.

The Must-Try Local Food of Hiroshima

The city’s signature dish, Hiroshima okonomiyaki is characterized by layering the cabbage, noodles, pork slices, and other ingredients. Head to Okonomimura and choose from 20 or so okonomiyaki restaurants, each with its own special take on the dish.

Yamaga Lantern Festival Sets the Town Aglow

Based on a story when townsfolk lit torches to guide an ancient emperor through a fog, summer’s Yamaga Lantern Festival illuminates the town in a magical glow. Highlights include women holding lanterns on their heads as they dance to a local folk song.

The Exquisite Artisanship of Yamaga Lanterns

Forgoing wood or nails, Yamaga lanterns are a local handicraft made entirely from paper. Using only glue and handmade washi paper, skilled artisans delicately craft the ornate lanterns, a regional specialty that dates back 600 years.

Savor a Beef Bowl Delight in Aso

No visit to Yamaga’s festival is complete without enjoying an akaushi (red beef) bowl. This popular dish is a bowl of rice topped with lavish amounts of Japanese beef, Akaushi beef, raised in the magnificent surroundings of Kumamoto and Aso.

A Lively Parade for Lost Love Ones
