Walking through amazing sakura (cherry blossoms) tunnels, one of the top sakura viewing spots in the Tohoku region
Kitakami Tenshochi has been selected as one of the top 100 sakura viewing sites in Japan and the three greatest sakura viewing sites in the Tohoku region. The tunnel comprising century-year-old cherry trees stretching 2 kilometers along the Kitakami River is quite a site, and it is the main attraction of the Sakura Festival in spring. This area is beautiful throughout the year, not only with cherry blossoms in spring but also for its colorful foliage in autumn and swans in winter.
Kitakami Tenshochi Sakura Festival
The Kitakami Tenshochi Sakura Festival is held in April and May, the best months to view cherry blossoms. During the festival, colorful carp streamers float in the air over the Kitakami River, and many activities are offered for sakura viewers to enjoy, including nostalgic horse-drawn carriages and cruise boats. One of the highlights is illuminated cherry trees at night, as well as the amazing petals reflected on the surface of the Kitakami River.
