Hitome Senbon Zakura along the Shiroishi Riverbank
A sublime fusion of a fresh river, mountain range, and cherry blossoms
The row of cherry blossoms that stretches 8 kilometers along the Shiroishi riverside from Ogawara-machi to Shibata-machi in southern Miyagi Prefecture is known as the “Hitome Senbon Zakura,” a representative cherry blossoms viewing spot in the Tohoku region that lets you literally see 1,000 cherry blossoms at a single glance. Against the backdrop of the snow-capped Zao Mountain Range in the distance, it offers a spectacular view when approximately 1,200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees come into full bloom.
Cherry blossom trees at the Funaoka Castle Park
Walking on the riverbank from Ogawara-machi while gazing at the cherry trees, you arrive at the Funaoka Castle Park situated on a small hilltop. By crossing the Shibata Sen'okyo Bridge, you can visit these two famous cherry blossom viewing spots. About 1,300 Somei Yoshino cherry trees are spread throughout the park, painting the entire mountain with pink when the flowers come into full bloom. From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the famous 1,000 cherry blossoms along the Shiroishi River, as well as the Zao Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. The park and the Shiroishi riverside have been designated as one of the top 100 places to see cherry blossoms in Japan. During the Ogawara and Shibata sakura festivals held from early to late April, the trains running on the JR Tohoku Main Line slow down so that passengers can enjoy the expansive view of the beautiful cherry blossoms from the train windows.
