Tour the production of traditional handmade washi paper and experience making paper
Durable and beautiful washi paper is made taking considerable time and effort with world-renowned traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The techniques to make the handmade washi paper Hosokawa Paper, which has been passed down for generations in Higashi Chichibu village, was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1988. You can experience making Hosokawa Paper at Washi-no-Sato in Higashi Chichibu Village.
The washipaper making workshop: Make your own original washi paper!
Handmade washi paper is produced here using traditional methods, and visitors can observe and experience the papermaking technique. In the experience zone, you can collect flowers from the surrounding areas and make an original postcard or mini tapestry using traditional methods with a 1,300-year history. Both children and adults alike can participate and enjoy this handmade washi papermaking experience.
Furusato Cultural Education Center
The small museum allows visitors to experience the traditional cultures of Higashi Chichibu, featuring exhibits of the village’s traditional industries including washi papers and bamboo ropes, as well as swords dedicated by samurais with relations to the village and the friendship doll “Blue-Eyed Doll: Margaret Fox,” which was presented to Japanese children from the United States in 1927.
Hosokawa Papermaking House
The facility was originally built in the late Edo period (1603-1868) as a papermaking house and was relocated and restored. Today, visitors can enter the front doma floor and observe the interior. This house was presented to Higashi Chichibu Village as part of collecting tools related to Hosokawa Paper and other handmade washi paper and is preserved as a tangible folk cultural property.
