Ishitani Residence
The town of Chizu prospered as the largest inn town in the Tottori Domain during the Edo period. The biggest building of the town, the Ishitani Residence, is a masterpiece of Japanese architecture and was designated as an Important Cultural Property. The house, which can be visited, features over 40 rooms, seven storehouses and Japanese gardens.
Explore the Residence's 20 Buildings
With an area of around 3000 tsubo (9000 square meters), the residence kept changing and evolving. From the late Edo Period (1603-1868) to the Showa Period (1926–1989) new parts have been built, so it features a variety of architectural styles. Sometimes the warehouses also host art and craft exhibitions.
Located inside the residence grounds is a tea house where you can also enjoy food. Lunch needs to be reserved at least one day in advance except for soba, which is served without need of a reservation.
