Yamanashi Arts Park
The park with the famous "Museum of Millet" is also a great photo spot onlooking Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture
Yamanashi Arts Park is home to the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art and the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Literature. The nature-filled park also has a rose garden and Japanese garden, offering beautiful scenery for all four seasons. Sculptures by artists such as Auguste Rodin and Taro Okamoto are displayed at various locations throughout the park, and together with the wonderful view of Mount Fuji, create a unique collaboration of art and nature.
Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Since its founding in 1978, Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art has been widely known as the "Museum of Millet" for its extensive collection of works by Jean-François Millet and opened the Millet Collection Gallery in 2009. Centered around Millet's "The Sower," its first acquisition, the museum exhibits a wide collection of his arts as well as other works by Barbizon School artists in a spacious environment. In addition, various works by artists with relations to Yamanashi and other contemporary Japanese artists are displayed in the Theme Exhibition Gallery. With approximately 10,000 works of art in its current collection, the museum is one of the largest art museums in Yamanashi.
Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Literature
The literature museum collects, preserves and exhibits various materials of literary figures from or related to Yamanashi Prefecture. The collection includes manuscripts, letters and personal items that belonged to important scholars in the history of Japanese literature such as Ichiyo Higuchi, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Hanako Muraoka, Osamu Dazai and Dakotsu Iida. Among them, the Ryunosuke Akutagawa collection is one of the most extensive in the country, with approximately 5,000 items including rough drafts of the short stories "Rashomon" and "Hana" (The Nose).
