Kasumi Port

Savor both Matsuba Crab and Kasumi Crab at Kasumi Port

An abundance of fresh seafood is caught all year round in Kasumi Port, located in the northern part of Hyogo Prefecture. Among them, Kasumi Port is best known for crabs. Matsuba Crab (snow crab), the king of winter delicacies, can be enjoyed from November to March of the following year, while Kasumi Crab (red snow crab) can be found for a longer time from September to May of the following year. Located in the same space as Kasumi Port's auction site is Yugyo-kan, a fishery cooperative directly managed store where visitors can buy just-boiled crabs and fresh sashimi.

Kasumi Crab

In the Kansai region, red snow crabs caught only at Kasumi Port are called Kasumi Crab. The crabs raised in the nutrient-rich deep ocean water are meaty, juicy and sweet. You can enjoy crabs prepared in various ways such as boiled, hot pot, grilled and sashimi. Unlike Matsuba Crabs, the fishing season is long, lasting from the first of September to the end of May of the following year, and the fishing method is crab cage fishery in which cages containing bait are sunk to the seabed. Since the catch is greater than that of Matsuba Crab, the price is fortunately reasonable.

Kasumi Matsuba Crab

Matsuba Crabs, the king of winter delicacies, are open to fishing from November 6 every year. The landed crabs are divided into ranks of 80 to 100 by their size, weight, color and shape, and are put on market auction. The selectors are the families of the shipowners, and their dedicated work supports Kasumi’s crab production. The inns in Kasumi also serve various Matsuba Crab dishes. Don’t miss the Kasumi Matsuba Crab Festival event held during the crab season.
