Dotonbori

Dotonbori: A lively, fun and tasty location
Dotonbori is in the Minami area of Osaka, one of Japan'’s leading commercial districts and a spot where you can fully experience the lively atmosphere of Osaka. It's a town of food and entertainment, where the iconic Kani Doraku crab restaurant and Glico signs are sure to catch your eyes. Dotonbori started as a theater town in the Edo Period (1603-1868), and is still home to the Shochikuza Theatre for Kabuki performances and many entertainment halls, as well as various types of restaurants to attract crowds year-round.
History of Dotonbori
The name Dotonbori comes from Nariyasu Doton, who began construction of canals in 1612 putting forth his own fortune. In later years, playhouses from all over Osaka were gathered on the south side of Dotonbori based on the city planning of the Edo Shogunate, and with permits granted for 47 teahouses, or restaurants for people who come to see plays, Dotonbori flourished for a long time as the leading place for Japanese theater. Many people flocked to the area for viewing plays, and restaurants were very prosperous, which continues to this day.
