Azaleas of Mount Tokusenjo

Save to List

One of Japan’s largest growing areas of azaleas

Mount Tokusenjo in Kesennuma City in Miyagi is known as one of Japan’s leading growing areas of azalea bushes that offers breathtaking views. During the peak season from mid-May to early June, 400,000 to 500,000 wild mountain azaleas and Japanese azaleas in full bloom paint the whole mountain in vivid red and orange colors. Everyone including beginners can hike up to the summit along the mountain trail lined with azalea flowers while enjoying the splendid views of the mountains and ocean of Minamisanriku.

Climb to the summit along the hiking trail surrounded by azaleas

It takes about 40 minutes to climb to the summit (711 meters) at a leisurely pace from the starting point of the hiking trail on the Kesennuma side. Because the trail has few height differences while azalea bushes are growing in clusters in the middle of the trail, you can fully enjoy a splendid view in a picnic-like atmosphere without having to climb all the way to the top of the mountain. That being said, the panoramic view of the contrasting vibrant red of the mountain and the cobalt blue of the Pacific Ocean from the top is truly breathtaking. Toilet facilities are available at the trailhead down the mountain.
