Mount Kanpu

Mount Kanpu covered with a grassy lawn that offers 360-degree unobstructed panoramic views of the surrounding scenery
The Oga Peninsula juts out into the Sea of Japan from the coast of Akita Prefecture. At the base of the peninsula sits the 355-meter-high Mount Kanpu. The road leading to the summit is a pleasant driving course called the Kanpuzan Panorama Line. The mountaintop is a perfect spot to take in splendid uninterrupted views of the entire peninsula, the reclaimed land of Lake Hachirogata and the coastline of the Sea of Japan. There are also a restaurant and a shop on the rotating observatory at the top of the mountain.
Mount Kanpu
Mount Kanpu, which is covered entirely with green fields, is actually a volcano. It is a relatively small mountain at 355 meters. Nevertheless, the panoramic vista from the top of the mountain is truly spectacular, as there is nothing to obstruct the views. You can see the paddy fields on the Hachirogata reclaimed land, Mount Chokai, the beautiful sea and the Shirakami mountain range. Mount Kanpu is also a famous mecca for paragliding that lets you enjoy a flying experience over the peninsula.
The Kanpuzan Rotating Observatory
The iconic observatory makes a full rotation in 13 minutes, offering an unimpeded 360-degree panoramic view. In the south lie the coastal area stretching from Akita City to the Oga Peninsula and Mount Chokai. In the west, you can view the peninsula's tallest Mount Honzan, Mount Shinzan known as the home of Namahage (a kind of ogre portrayed by men wearing masks and a traditional costume) and Cape Nyudozaki. Take in the views of the Port of Noshiro and the World Heritage site of the Shirakami mountain range in the north, as well as Ogata village developed on the Hachirogata reclaimed land in the east. You can make reservations for paragliding experiences here.
