Ogoto Onsen, established by Saicho 1,200 years ago
Ogoto Onsen was founded 1,200 years ago by the renowned Buddhist monk Dengyo Daishi Saicho of Mount Hiei. It was said that when the villagers drank the underground water gushing out from Nenbutsu Pond in Ogoto’s Hoko-ji Temple, they immediately recovered from difficult illnesses, and skin diseases and heat rashes were cured. The spring water has been long cherished as a sacred spring, and when it was analyzed in modern times, it was revealed to be a radium spring, and development as a hot spring spa began. Ogoto Onsen takes 20 minutes by train from Kyoto and 1 hour by train from Osaka, and is one of the most easily accessible hot springs in the Kansai area. Visitors can enjoy the historic hot spring for a day trip as well as foot baths free of charge.
